i’m looking for a new place pretty seriously now. i think it’s realistic to find a bachelor somewhere east of lansdowne and west of jarvis for around $500, but unfortunately if i don’t find anything in around 2 weeks it looks like i’ll have to settle for living with strangers! i’m graduating less than a year from now, and it would be great to live alone somewhere i can barely afford while i work through the school year, and then easily afford after i’m done and doing something full-time. as opposed to having to go into debt

i had two dreams in a row on saturday and sunday night that actually messed me up a bit. i can honestly say i had a bad day today, and i haven’t thought that in a very long time. nothing really bad actually happened, i was just messed up from those dreams, a little sick when i woke up, cut myself shaving, spilled water on my good jeans, and a landlord stood me up. i guess this is what happens when i start seriously keeping track of my dreams. not to say that the dreams caused that other stuff, just that it compounded everything. the problem for me is not that i had a bad day, it’s that i never have bad days and i just did. whatev, i’m ok now and i’m working in the studio all day tomorrow.

i engineered and played drums for a film soundtrack last month. that film just made this year’s TIFF! now i’m definitely going to get to see it! it also turns out the soundtrack’s composer (and the filmmaker’s husband) is jeff mangum, of neutral milk hotel. i worked with him for 12 hours without knowing this – i only found out a week later.

“i’m looking for this stuff i saw someone use on a painting…it’s like a thick liquid, you brush it on a canvas, and it changes the color to brown…”

what did she buy? brown paint

earlier in the day a guy comes in, slams his mcdonalds cup of water on the counter, picks up a fineliner and starts drawing on his arm. “hey man, how are you doing?” “i’m great, just using this thing here, hey you got any paper?” i give him a little bit of receipt paper. he writes an acrostic poem on it, crumples it up, and rubs it vigorously on his arm while he walks out.

ziggy stardust is my favorite album ever. i’ve been listening to this album a lot since 2005 – its synaesthesia is more visceral than most things, and it covers a lot of the last 3 years of my life. led zeppelin is still my favorite rock band, but this album is by far the biggest part of my life. funny that ‘my life’ isn’t really ‘my life’ until about the summer before i moved to toronto – that’s when really started being independent. i worked a lot that summer and didn’t live with my folks the whole time, and they were on vacation for a lot of it, and that’s when i first really got into this album.

i moved to toronto that fall and i remember also being into gorillaz and zeppelin, especially really rare zeppelin bootlegs, but in the most radical period of change in my entire life i was listening to ziggy. the winter and spring of ’06, hunky dory was my favorite album (moving backwards). i didn’t listen to a lot of music that summer, which probably contributes to why it was such a messed up summer in my mind.

the album has obviously stayed in my library since then, but i didn’t really listen to it again until last month, when i listened to a huge amount of bowie. every single song on the album is amazing to me and still gives me goosebumps if i listen to it loud enough, and most of the songs have a single strong synaesthetic memory attached to them.

another dream showed up in my dream journal that i don’t even remember writing about:

“Someone is sitting in front of my clothes drawers, and I need to put some boxers on. I keep saying ‘excuse me’, but they can’t hear me.”

i don’t even really play video games anymore – i hadn’t picked up my DS in maybe a year, but i had heard about this game’s predecessor and when it came out, i decided to give it a try. even though it’s in japanese, it’s incredibly fun. here are two videos of me playing:
