they say your life is going very well

a lot of stuff is going on. the older of my sisters is coming up to visit for a few days around canadian thanksgiving, derek visiting the week after, i’m going to be doing all kinds of work with don in the next bit, i’m the best kind of busy! i feel like i’ve been writing less (in this blog), but i think what’s actually happening is a lot more interesting stuff is going on every day.

i went to one of my cousins’ birthday parties last night, she got (among other things) a guitar. reason for me to practice on mine! it would be sick to be able to play together.

the plane that carries the space shuttle‘s “rear mounting point is labeled with a tongue-in-cheek instruction to “Attach Orbiter Here” — clarified by the precautionary warning “Black Side Down”“. that’s horrible engineer humour but i find it funny? i don’t even get along with engineers.

that reminds of something i thought of a while ago: as far as musicians go, i usually only get along with the ones that play concert pitch instruments. people that play things like trumpets, horns, all reed instruments, and euphonium seem to be fairly incompatible with me. the exception to this is saxes.

i made a new favicon for the site. solely because the ‘blank page’ bookmark is ugly. enjoy

i never worked a day in my life, i just lay back and let the big beat leave me

it’s always sunny in philadelphia is one of the best tv shows, i am so happy that it’s back for 4 more seasons or something awesome like that.

what are we gonna do if we catch him?
i’m thinking something teabag related… yep

in orchestra today, i played this super fast conga part pretty well, and the (brand new) conductor singled me out and asked for a little more articulation on some sixteenth note triplets, “like a tabla player”. i then played my part solo in front of 80 musicians i don’t know, perfectly, and he goes “you’re great, perfect. let’s move on.”

i had an amazing day!

oh yeah

work story from sunday i just remembered, not a crazy story, just a textbook example of Ignorance:

a guy comes in, wanting to buy a bunch of frames in a certain size and style. we don’t have any more of the size he wants in that style, because the whole series has been discontinued by the company, as in ‘they still exist but our store isn’t going to carry them after we sell out’. i explain this to him and he becomes irate. not irate towards me, irate towards ‘head office’. he takes a conspiratorial air towards me, assuming i have a ‘fight the system’ demeanor regarding my bosses. “man! every time i really like something, they discontinue it! you notice that? as soon as something’s popular, they pull it off the shelves! makes no sense! and not just here, lots of stores do it!”. i reply “actually it just seems like that because you only notice the things you like being discontinued, tons of things are discontinued that you don’t notice or care about.”

this is completely true (and exactly what had happened), but all of a sudden he’s mad at me for pointing out his logical fallacy. he brusquely asks me “who owns this company? he’s going to hear from me.” and leaves.

whatever, dude.

on my way home tonight i almost got badly injured! i was going maybe 25mph on bloor st. at 11:30 on a wednesday night, not a very busy street, but around ossington someone opened their door RIGHT in front of me. i did an amazing swerve (i’m glad nobody was beside or behind me!) and now i’m fine. seriously though, that was wild

yesterday’s post immediately hit the first page of google, so now i’m responsible for 40 percent of the “tyler kerr” internet presence. woop

i got kind of shafted in percussion ensemble. every single year it’s scheduled for 11am-3pm, which is a huge amount of time for one class, but there are always a bunch of pieces with different groups of performers so nobody ever has to be there for the entire time. in previous years people have had classes from 11-noon or 2-3, and they just get scheduled around, no problem. when i got the assignment email last week i was really happy – out of six pieces, i play in four of them, and it looked like the best four pieces too. i was surprised to see we had rehearsal on the 16th; i had been explicitly told no rehearsal until the 23rd. i emailed the director and let her know about my film lecture from 2 to 3 and she just removed me from two of the four pieces.

i’ll just have to make my own percussion ensemble entertainment. i might reform sonance if we find a good fourth, but i don’t know one right now.

i had a dream about using a semicolon last night. i was on the computer writing in this blog while someone from school was watching. i was trying to join two sentences, and i had already overused parentheses, hyphens, and commas, and ‘and’ or ‘but’ wouldn’t work, so i put in a semicolon and it worked perfectly so we both cheered a little, and the dream ended. weird. also i feel really, really awkward writing about punctuation! it’s like talking about someone when you know they can hear you.

my oldest friend from richmond, derek, is coming up to toronto for a few days next month. that’s going to be cool, i see him about once a year. he visited for a while before, but i lived in such a small place, was so busy with school, and had so little money it seemed like we barely got to do anything. this is going to be quite different…

i’m supposed to be in film class right now, but wednesdays are always just screenings. i’m just downloading the movie and i’ll watch it at dinner tonight!

“tyler kerr”

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

a google search for my name gives 2,650 results. three of the top ten are me! “tyler” is consistently in the top 20 for baby names, and “kerr” is allegedly the 721st most popular surname in the US.

account for the fact that kerr is a scottish name, and canada has a much higher percentage of recent-generation scottish immigrants (and thus kerrs), there are (relatively) even more “tyler kerr”s in canada. there was a toronto dj in the ’90s with my name. there’s a “tyson kerr” at my school – our paperwork got mixed up in second year. pre-emptive ‘what up’ to tyson for next time he googles his name. it’s totally narcissistic of me to care, but 30% of the top results for my (fairly common) name on google is pretty awesome, i think!

yesterday was such an insane sensory overload that today i basically did nothing today except read and work out, and i still feel like i’m not finished mentally cataloging everything. i honestly believe i’ve never experienced that many separate, important things in one day.

i love this so much. it’s like beach week in norway, party time for graduating high school students. you wear a uniform and you can add badges to the uniform by doing ridiculous stuff. my personal favorites:
* spending the night at a teacher’s house and making him/her breakfast in the morning, all without being noticed
* passing through the back seat of a car stopping on a red light

“hey mr. olufsen, good morning! i made waffles!”
“excuse me, just gotta get through here…’scuse me….thanks!”

so this happened to me this morning. i’m dealing.

it’s always rad when i realize that nobody judges me as harshly as i judge them.

i smoked my pushup test tonight, aiming for 25 and got 36. yes!

work was INSANE today. i was going to install custom firmware on my canon point&shoot to do a timelapse shot of the cash registers at work tomorrow, but i left it at work by accident.

i’m staying up late watching movies waiting for that bug to show itself so i can destroy it with symphonic metamorphosis.

used to be into nostalgia

my favorite word right now is “attenuation”.

i’m going to get together a quartet and make a sweet video of “vous avez du feu?“. i’ve got the gear and the time, and i really like the piece, so why not…?

the next week of my pushup plan is going to kill me.

this is a demo of a good song.

just jammin out

“september 11th keeps getting more boring ever since 2002″

some sweet shows are starting again…sunny in philadelphia and the office are both this month – the funniest american tv shows, in my opinion. some bad shows that i watch anyway (prison break, heroes), dexter. pretty nice, something to do in the morning before class.

i bought my books for film class. something about having books for a class made me very excited. i haven’t bought books since first year (my electives have been really easy).

hockey school again. i’m in really good shape i think, strength and cardio-wise, i just need to skate a lot more. i’m going to try and find some open ice and practice.

ever since i started seriously working out, i’ve been really hungry all the time. hopefully this is a good sign and i may be gaining weight for the first time since i was 17! i’m going to buy a scale tomorrow.

my new facebook image is funny to me – that’s a still from DV on top of an escher sketch
