priceless Chicken lives
December 2nd, 2010, 1:14 pmi recently quit my weekend job, managing an art supply store for the last 3 1/2 years. goodbye curry’s! i will now be working full time for an awesome & huge tech company, starting in a few days, and i am very excited.
unrelated, here is the funniest thing i’ve seen today:
This Facebook ad is particularly heinous:
“IT’s” cannot sell “ITSELVES”, Chickens, and other animals, are most certainly not an “IT”, but *THEY*, *HE*, *SHE*.And to sell their flesh, chopped up, possibly from multiple Chickens, for THREE DOLLARS FIFTY? Their lives are *priceless*
Heres something that Chickens are good at “selling”, that *THEY* are lovely, gentle animals, who love life, love each other, love *THEIR* human friends, that *THEY* love *THEIR* lives.
[...]
The least we can do for our Chicken Friends, and all other animals, is to respect *THEIR* individual lives, that *THEY* are not “things”, but other sentient beings, with just as much right to life as you or I.
They are why I promote Veganism.
i love so many things about this. chicken with a capital C. his attachment to his Chicken Friends (where does this come from?). he believes that his Chicken Friends love him. he proposes that Chicken life is as important as human life (!).
i wonder if he has blocked out ‘nature’, where foxes, raccoons, and dogs (which (“who”?) are all omnivores and therefore not “required” to eat Animal Friends) are all natural predators of chickens…or even better, that your Chicken Friends themselves are also omnivores with diets that can include mice.

Hi Tyler! Glad you enjoyed my post, and my Chicken Friends, I’ve penned (or more accurately typed) a reply on my blog,

best wishes

thanks for the response! your chickens seem like cool dudes, my aunt has some chickens but they are jerks.
i am actually curious though: from your perspective, why is it ok for Chicken Friends to eat mice (or foxes to eat Chicken Friends), but humans ought to respect a “right to life”?

Hi Tyler,
Most are female, they are cool Chicks though
I dont really think its ok for any animal to harm another, but thats what so many of them do, I cant stop them. Generally, I’ve never seen the Chickens I care for attack other animals, although the Hens do ward off male Blackbirds! But never Sparrows, Thrush, female Blackbirds etc!
They would however kill and eat insects, if they found them. I’ve stopped them from eating a Snail once, I’m sure they’ve killed other animals while I were away.
You and I can discuss the issue, I cant debate killing V not killing with my Chicken Friends
http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/ is a great place for more questions about Veganism.
Best wishes Tyler!

if you think it’s not OK for animals to harm each other, i can’t take you seriously – i don’t even know where to start. you seem to be a happy person, but you live in a world where evolution has produced thousands and thousands of violent, carnivorous species?
these animals are incapable of learning or making decisions above a very basic level – at best you could teach every monkey, dog, and dolphin in the world that it’s wrong to eat meat (but not why), leaving thousands of other species incapable of comprehending ideas like “wrong” or adapting to cricket-flavoured seitan.

Hi Tyler,
I dont think its OK that other animals do MANY things to each other, would you agree? Just as many people do things to each other that I’d disagree with, think of what happens in war for example. You and I can only be responsible for our own actions. I certainly wish others didnt harm each other in any way, human and nonhuman alike, in the case of nonhumans, its certainly difficult to get that across to them!
I can however talk with other humans about harm though.
Is it like, 2 in the morning where you are? Gee, get some sleep! Its 8PM at night, Friday here.
Nice meeting you Tyler
